It’s not often that an artist manages to find greater success after their first claim to fame comes to an end, but singer-songwriter Christian Burns is living proof that lightning can strike twice. After attaining world-renowned success as a pop star with his iconic UK band BBMak, Christian became one of the most sought after vocalists in the dance music world, finding his niche recording for the likes of Tiesto, Armin van Buuren, Benny Benassi and BT. A career spanning ten years, millions of records sold and lyrics that inspire in any language, Christian stands strong as a vocal tour de force across all genres.
Like many who have made music their livelihood, Christian’s early home environment cultivated his passion for music and played a formative role in his artistic pursuits. His father Tony, a member of 60’s UK band The Signs, filled their home with a diverse array of sounds and taught Christian how to play the guitar. Together, the two built a modest home studio with a four-track tape machine and from then on, Christian was focused on learning the ins-and-outs of making music.
After forming BBMak with fellow singer/songwriters Mark Barry and Stephen McNally, Christian quickly went from his home studio to recording at world class locations with prominent industry producers. Selling three million records worldwide, BBMak took the music charts by storm with their first single ‘Back Here,’ which went to #1 on US radio, hit the top spot in Japan and garnered countless awards including ‘Song Of The Year’ from ASCAP and ‘Most Played Song Of The Year’ from PRS.
When the time came to transition into a solo career, it was the discovery of a Moog modular hiding in his father’s attic that inspired Christian’s next step. Using synths and guitars, he experimented with a new sound for his next project The Bleach Works. This caught the attention of Dutch mega-DJ Tiësto and led to the pair’s collaboration on ‘In The Dark,’ the lead single from Tiësto’s Grammy-nominated album Elements of Life. Instantaneously, requests from other world-renowned producers poured in and Christian was soon dance music’s leading man.
Teaming up with Armin van Buuren on his Mirage album, Christian wrote the #1 smash hit ‘This Light Between Us’ and toured with him across 2010 and 2011 while still finding the time to write and perform ‘Love and Motion’ from Benny Benassi’s Rock N Rave album. In 2013, the release of his own critically acclaimed, full-length album Simple Modern Answers saw Christian collaborating with a host of EDM’s biggest players, including Paul van Dyk, Ferry Corsten, Paul Oakenfold, Armin and more. 2014 brought another song with Tiësto called ‘Shimmer’ from A Town Called Paradise and ‘Miracles‘ on Andrew Rayel’s album Find Your Harmony.
But for all his A-list collaborations, it’s with electronic pioneer BT that Christian found his musical soul mate. After befriending Brian Transeau on tour with Tiësto in 2007, Christian co-wrote and sang on three tracks from BT’s Grammy-nominated album These Hopeful Machines – ‘The Emergency,’ ‘Forget Me’ and lead track ‘Suddenly’. The two hit it off so well that they decided to form a band called All Hail The Silence, taking influences from synthesizer’s golden era, the 80‘s, and bands like Depeche Mode, Yaz, The Blue Nile, and The Human League, among others. Under this joint moniker Christian and BT have been given the freedom to showcase a different side of themselves artistically, using step sequencers and modular/analog synthesizers to create their tracks without the aid of a computer. In 2014, All Hail The Silence toured the US with Erasure, all the while secretly putting the finishing touches on their debut album.
A lot has changed in the music industry throughout his illustrious career, but one thing that remains constant is Christian Burns’ ability to create music that moves us. With success as a band member, solo artist, and now a new band on the rise, Christian is poised to solidify his place as one of the most celebrated vocalists of his generation.
